As the holy month of Shravan (Sawan) approached, Devsharma decided to observe the Sawan Somvar Vrat with full dedication. Every Monday, he would wake before sunrise, bathe in the river, offer water and Bel Patra to the Shiva Linga, chant mantras, and fast the entire day.

Weeks passed, and the couple’s devotion intensified. Goddess Parvati, witnessing this selfless dedication, was moved. She turned to Lord Shiva and asked,
“Mahadev, such pure devotion must not go unanswered. Why do they remain childless?”
Shiva replied with calm, “Their sorrow is the fruit of their previous birth’s karma. Yet, your compassion compels me. I shall grant them a child—with a lifespan of only 16 years.”
That night, Lord Shiva appeared in Devsharma’s dream and said,
“O devotee, your prayers have reached me. You will soon have a son, but know this—his life will end at 16. Accept this with courage.”
Devsharma awoke in tears, grateful yet fearful. As promised, within months, Sushila gave birth to a boy, whom they named Neel.

Neel grew up to be wise, compassionate, and devoted to Shiva—just like his parents. As he turned 15, Devsharma sent him on a pilgrimage to Prayag (modern-day Allahabad) to study scriptures and seek blessings from sages.
On his journey, Neel reached the town of Vijaypur, where chaos reigned. The prince, set to marry the princess of a neighbouring kingdom, had disappeared. The royal astrologer declared that only someone pious and pure could replace him in the ritual—or the kingdom would face destruction.
Neel, glowing with divine energy, was chosen to sit in as the ceremonial groom. But when the real prince returned, the princess had already offered her garland to Neel and refused to marry anyone else.
Neel humbly excused himself and continued his journey to Prayag. There, he immersed himself in learning. But on the eve of his 16th birthday, he fell ill and, by midnight, passed away peacefully—just as Lord Shiva had foretold.

Back home, Sushila sensed something terrible had happened. Her cries reached the heavens. Goddess Parvati, deeply touched, approached Shiva again.
“Mahadev,” she pleaded, “how can we allow this brave, pure soul to leave so soon? His devotion, and that of his parents, is unmatched.”
Lord Shiva smiled. “True devotion always bears fruit. Let this be a reminder that destiny may be written, but devotion can rewrite it.”
With that, Shiva descended to the spot where Neel’s body lay and whispered, “Neel, awaken. Your journey is not yet complete.”
Neel’s breath returned. His body glowed with new life. The sages around him bowed in reverence, realizing they had witnessed a divine miracle.
Homecoming and Eternal Blessing
Neel returned home to tearful joy. His parents embraced him, and the town of Chandipur celebrated for days. Neel married the princess who had chosen him, and he lived a long, righteous life.
Devsharma continued to observe Sawan Somvar Vrat every year, teaching others that faith, devotion, and divine timing are more powerful than even fate.
