Gyan Bharatam Portal Launch
Gyan Bharatam Portal Launch : Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched the Gyan Bharatam portal at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, marking a significant step towards preserving and sharing India’s ancient wisdom. The launch took place during a three-day international conference on traditional knowledge (September 11–13), themed “Reclaiming India’s Knowledge Heritage through Manuscript Digitisation.”
A Digital Gateway to India’s Ancient Treasures
The Gyan Bharatam portal is designed as a dedicated digital platform to accelerate the digitisation, preservation, and public access of rare manuscripts. This initiative aims to make centuries-old texts—covering subjects like science, philosophy, mathematics, Ayurveda, and culture—accessible to scholars, researchers, and the general public worldwide.
International Conference on Knowledge Heritage
The conference brings together leading scholars, conservationists, technologists, and policy experts from India and abroad. Over three days, they will discuss strategies to:
- Revive and conserve India’s unique manuscript heritage
- Develop cutting-edge digitisation techniques
- Establish metadata standards for better cataloguing
- Address legal frameworks around ancient texts
- Explore cultural diplomacy through global knowledge sharing
An exhibition of rare manuscripts and presentations on ancient scripts add depth to the event, highlighting the global significance of India’s traditional knowledge systems.

Sanskrit: The Timeless Language of Knowledge
PM Modi has consistently highlighted the role of Sanskrit in preserving India’s intellectual and cultural legacy. On World Sanskrit Day (August 9), he called Sanskrit a “timeless source of knowledge and expression,” underscoring its influence across science, art, and philosophy.
He noted that in the last decade, the government has:
- Established Central Sanskrit Universities
- Set up Sanskrit Teaching Centres
- Offered grants to Sanskrit scholars
- Launched the Gyan Bharatam Mission to digitise priceless manuscripts
These steps, he said, have already benefited countless students and researchers in India and abroad.
Voices of Support
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath echoed these sentiments, calling Sanskrit “the expression of the soul of India and the eternal source of wisdom.” He urged citizens to preserve and use the language in daily life to strengthen India’s cultural identity.
Why It Matters
India is home to millions of manuscripts—some thousands of years old—that hold vast knowledge of science, medicine, astronomy, literature, and spiritual traditions. Yet many of these priceless works risk being lost due to decay or lack of access. The Gyan Bharatam portal represents a historic step in safeguarding and sharing this intellectual treasure with the world.
