– Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to economic self-reliance at the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show 2025, highlighting that the country’s growth remains “attractive despite global disruptions and uncertainties.”

The statement comes as India faces external pressures such as increased U.S. tariffs and a sharp rise in H-1B visa fees under U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration.

“It’s No Longer Acceptable to Be Dependent”

Addressing industry leaders, innovators, and international delegates, the Prime Minister delivered a clear message:

“It’s no longer acceptable for a country like India to be dependent on anyone… Disruptions don’t hinder us; even in those circumstances, we look for new directions.”

He emphasized that excessive reliance on foreign production weakens national growth, urging businesses to scale up domestic manufacturing and innovation.

From “Chips to Ships”: Building a Self-Reliant Economy

PM Modi reiterated his government’s goal of producing everything “from chips to ships” within India. He underscored the need for greater investment in research, development, and technology, stressing that robust R&D is the backbone of a resilient economy.

Key reforms include:

  • Decriminalizing minor business violations, removing outdated rules that previously triggered unnecessary legal action.
  • Encouraging startups, MSMEs, and large enterprises to expand manufacturing across sectors, from electronics to heavy engineering.

Defense Sector: “Made in India” Weaponry

Highlighting defense as a symbol of sovereignty, the Prime Minister announced major progress in domestic arms manufacturing:

  • AK-203 rifle production will soon commence at a Russia-assisted factory in Uttar Pradesh.
  • The state’s Defense Industrial Corridor is already producing sophisticated equipment, including the BrahMos missile.
  • Every part of India’s defense ecosystem, he said, should proudly bear the “Made in India” mark.

Russia’s participation as a partner country in this year’s trade show reflects India’s growing strategic collaborations while staying true to the self-reliance vision.

Why This Matters

Economists note that India’s focus on Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) not only strengthens the domestic economy but also cushions the country from global policy shocks—like sudden tariff hikes or restrictive visa policies.

With a population exceeding 1.4 billion and a rapidly digitizing market, India’s pivot toward indigenous manufacturing and home-grown innovation could create millions of jobs and reinforce its position as a global economic powerhouse.
