India will mark its 79th Independence Day on Friday, August 15, 2025, with grand celebrations across the country. The central event will take place at the historic Red Fort in Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the tricolour and deliver his address to the nation.

This year’s celebrations will revolve around the theme ‘New India’, symbolizing the nation’s determination towards self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat), technological progress, economic growth, and the vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047 — the centenary of India’s independence.

Historical Significance of the Red Fort Event

The tradition of the Prime Minister addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort began in 1947, when Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru delivered the first Independence Day speech. Since then, this moment has become a symbol of unity, sovereignty, and India’s democratic spirit.

Every year, the Red Fort ceremony features the guard of honour, the national flag hoisting, the 21-gun salute, and the Prime Minister’s speech highlighting the government’s achievements and future roadmap.

PM Modi’s Grand Entry and Guard of Honour

On arrival at the Red Fort, Prime Minister Modi will be received by:

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh
  • Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth
  • Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh

He will then be escorted to the saluting dais by Lieutenant General Bhavnish Kumar, General Officer Commanding Delhi Area.

The guard of honour will feature 96 personnel from the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, and Delhi Police, under the command of Wing Commander A.S. Sekhon of the IAF. Accompanying PM Modi on the ramparts will be Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, the three service chiefs, and other senior defence officials.

Flag Hoisting with 21-Gun Salute

Flying Officer Rashika Sharma will assist PM Modi in hoisting the national flag. The event will include a 21-gun salute fired by the 1721 Field Battery (Ceremonial), using indigenous 105 mm light field guns, led by Major Pawan Singh Shekhawat — showcasing India’s defence self-reliance.

As the flag unfurls, the Air Force band will play the national anthem for the first time, joined by 11 ‘Agniveer Vayu’ musicians.

Adding to the spectacle, two Mi-17 helicopters of the IAF will fly over the Red Fort:

  • One carrying the national flag
  • Another carrying the flag of ‘Operation Sindoor’, showering flowers

Operation Sindoor — a successful military-humanitarian mission — will be a special highlight this year. Its logo will appear on Gyanpath decorations, invitation cards, and official event backdrops.

‘New India’ Formation on Gyanpath

After the PM’s speech, 2,500 NCC cadets and ‘Mera Bharat’ volunteers will sing the national anthem and form the logo of ‘New India’ on Gyanpath, symbolizing unity and the nation’s shared vision for progress.
