Kanwar Yatra in Sawan Month: Sacred Journey of Devotion and Spiritual Resolve

Kanwar Yatra in Sawan Month

Kanwar Yatra

🛕 What is Kanwar Yatra?

Kanwar Yatra : Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage observed during the Hindu month of Shravan (Sawan), dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in Hinduism. Devotees, known as Kanwariyas, travel—mostly on foot—to collect holy water from the Ganga River, and carry it in ‘Kanwars’ (a bamboo pole with two water pots hanging on either end) to offer it to Lord Shiva, particularly at prominent Shiva temples like:

  • Baidyanath Jyotirlinga in Deoghar (Jharkhand)
  • Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh)
  • Neelkanth Mahadev in Rishikesh (Uttarakhand)
  • Pura Mahadev and Augharnath Temple in Meerut (UP)
  • Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri in Uttarakhand

🗓️ When is Kanwar Yatra?

  • It takes place in the month of Sawan, the fifth month in the Hindu calendar (mid-July to mid-August).
  • In 2025, Sawan month starts on July 10 and ends on August 9, with Shravan Shivratri on August 6, 2025.

📜 Historical & Mythological Origins

  • The Yatra is rooted in Puranic legends and the myth of Samudra Manthan.
  • When the ocean was churned by gods and demons, a deadly poison called Halahal emerged. Lord Shiva drank this poison to save the universe.
  • To cool Lord Shiva’s throat, Ganga Jal (sacred water from River Ganges) was offered to him.
  • The ritual became a tradition—devotees collect Ganga Jal and offer it at Shiva temples to reenact the ancient divine sacrifice.

🙏 Spiritual Significance

  1. Penance (Tapasya): Devotees walk barefoot for hundreds of kilometers, fast, and chant “Bol Bam”, symbolizing their devotion, penance, and surrender to Lord Shiva.
  2. Karma Cleansing: Kanwar Yatra is believed to help absolve one of sins and bad karma, and helps in achieving peace, health, and wish fulfillment.
  3. Vow Fulfillment (Mannat): Many undertake this Yatra as a way to fulfill vows or give thanks after wishes are granted—such as recovery from illness, childbirth, or success in life.

👥 Demographics and Participation

  • Over 3 to 5 crore devotees participate annually in India and Nepal.
  • Major participating states: Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal.
  • International Participation: Small groups of Kanwariyas also come from Nepal, Mauritius, and Fiji where there are large Hindu communities.

🧭 Major Routes and Pilgrimage Circuits

1. Sultanganj (Bihar) to Deoghar (Jharkhand) – 108 km

  • Most famous route, done by Dak Kanwariyas (non-stop runners)
  • The only place where Ganga flows northwards (Uttarvahini Ganga), considered very auspicious.

2. Haridwar to Neelkanth Mahadev – 30 km (one way)

  • Popular among young Kanwariyas from Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab.

3. Varanasi Circuit
