Mizoram Gets ₹9,000-Crore Development
Mizoram Gets ₹9,000-Crore Development : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced a ₹9,000-crore infrastructure and development package for Mizoram, reaffirming his government’s commitment to make the Northeast the “growth engine of India.”
Despite bad weather preventing him from reaching the scheduled venue at Sepai Lamual in Aizawl, the Prime Minister addressed the gathering virtually from Lengpui Airport, about 20 km from the state capital.
Major Projects Inaugurated
Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for a series of high-impact projects aimed at boosting connectivity, trade, and sports in Mizoram and the wider Northeast:
- Transportation & Connectivity
- Thenzawl–Sialsuk Road and Khankawn–Rongura Road to enhance inter-district travel.
- Aizawl Bypass Road (45 km) to decongest the capital’s traffic.
- Chhimtuipui River Bridge on the Lawngtlai–Siaha Road, a key component of the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Framework, set to cut travel time between southern districts—Lunglei, Siaha and Lawngtlai—and Aizawl.
- Mizoram’s first railway line, the Bairabi–Sairang stretch, along with the new Sairang Railway Station, connecting the state to the national rail network.
- Flagged off three long-distance trains, including the Rajdhani Express linking Aizawl to Delhi, improving passenger and freight movement.
- Energy & Industry
- A 30 TMTPA LPG bottling plant at Mualkhang by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) to strengthen clean energy supply across the region.
- Sports & Youth Development
- Foundation stone for a Khelo India Multipurpose Indoor Hall, reinforcing Mizoram’s reputation as a football talent hub and expanding modern sports infrastructure.
Key Economic Announcements
Highlighting the government’s reforms, Modi pointed to GST rate cuts that have eased the burden on common citizens.
- Soaps once taxed at 27% GST now attract just 5%.
- Cement and construction materials will become cheaper starting September 22.
- Scooter and car manufacturers have already begun price reductions, bringing festive cheer to buyers.
The Prime Minister stressed that the “One Nation, One Tax” system has benefited poor and low-income groups by making healthcare and insurance more affordable, citing lower taxes on medical test kits and health insurance compared to earlier regimes.
Economic Outlook
Modi projected India’s economy to grow at 7.8% in the first quarter of FY 2025-26, positioning the nation as the fastest-growing major economy globally.
Northeast as India’s Growth Driver
“The people who were earlier neglected and marginalised are now part of the mainstream,” Modi said. “For the last 11 years, we have worked tirelessly for the development of the Northeast, and today this region has become the growth engine of India.”
Why It Matters
The projects are expected to:
- Boost trade and tourism, linking Mizoram with national and international markets.
- Create local employment opportunities in infrastructure, logistics, and energy sectors.
- Encourage sports excellence and youth participation through enhanced facilities.
- Support environmentally sustainable development with improved LPG distribution.
