Nagaland-Japan Connect 2026 : On January 28, 2026, Nagaland stepped confidently onto the global stage with the launch of Nagaland-Japan Connect 2026—a visionary initiative that redefines how a small Indian state can think big about its future.
More than a government program, Nagaland-Japan Connect is a promise: a promise of skills over shortcuts, global exposure over local limitations, and long-term opportunity over short-term employment fixes.
Hosted by the Nagaland Investment and Development Authority (IDAN) at the Integrated Business Hub and Innovation Centre (IBHIC) in Dimapur, the event brought together senior Nagaland officials, representatives from Japan, industry leaders, academic institutions, and hundreds of hopeful young professionals—all united by one belief: Nagaland’s youth belong in the global workforce.

The world of work is changing rapidly. Japan, one of the most advanced economies globally, is facing a critical challenge—an aging population and a shrinking workforce. At the same time, Nagaland has a young, disciplined, and aspirational population seeking meaningful employment and global exposure.
Nagaland-Japan Connect bridges this gap—strategically and sustainably.
Presiding over the program, I. Changsang, NCS, made it clear that this initiative is not a one-time overseas placement drive. Instead, it is a structured ecosystem focused on:
- Skill development
- Language training
- Cultural orientation
- Institutional partnerships
- Long-term career pathways
The aim is simple yet powerful: prepare Naga youth not just to work abroad, but to succeed globally.
🌱 Global Exposure With Local Impact
In his welcome address, Abu Metha, Advisor to the Chief Minister and Chairman of IDAN, spoke directly to the aspirations of Nagaland’s youth.
He encouraged young people to step beyond borders, learn global best practices, and return with knowledge, confidence, and experience that can help transform Nagaland’s economy.
His message resonated strongly:
Global success should ultimately strengthen local development.
This balance—between outward mobility and inward growth—lies at the heart of the Nagaland-Japan Connect vision.
🏭 Creating Opportunities in a Competitive World
Industries and Commerce Minister Hekani Jakhalu highlighted a stark reality: with over a million job seekers, traditional employment avenues alone are no longer enough.
To create sustainable livelihoods, Nagaland must become globally competitive.
Calling Nagaland-Japan Connect “a beginning, not an end,” she emphasized that Japan’s engagement reflects the trust, discipline, and work ethic of Naga youth. According to her, this partnership is a recognition of Nagaland’s human capital—not just its labour supply.
🇯🇵 Japan’s Growing Confidence in Naga Talent
Representing Kochi Prefecture, Kunitoshi Hojo shared a compelling statistic that captured the progress already made.
Just two years ago, there were zero Naga workers in Kochi. Today, that number stands at nineteen—and rising.
Though modest in scale, the growth signals something larger: trust is being built, success stories are emerging, and pathways are opening. As cooperation deepens, many more Naga youth are expected to find meaningful careers in Japan.
☕ Beyond Jobs: Culture, Innovation and Economic Exchange
Industry expert Kaushik Choudhury expanded the conversation beyond employment numbers.
He emphasized that Nagaland is being presented to Japan not merely as a labour source, but as a centre of culture, quality products, and innovation. Initiatives such as:
- Nagaland coffee promotion
- Senior living villages
- Cultural exchange centres
demonstrate how this partnership can drive inclusive economic growth while preserving identity and heritage.
📘 Language: The Foundation of Global Employability
At the academic core of Nagaland-Japan Connect lies language training.
Dr. Pangernala Walling from Nagaland University’s Centre of Excellence for Languages explained that targeted, subsidized certificate programs are being designed to ensure students are:
- Linguistically prepared
- Culturally aware
- Professionally job-ready
In a global marketplace, language is not just communication—it is opportunity.
📈 A Strategic Investment in the Future
Delivering the keynote address, Deputy Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang described Nagaland-Japan Connect as a strategic economic intervention rather than a welfare initiative.
Nagaland’s engagement with Japan dates back to 2014, and sustained investment in skills, language, and exposure is expected to generate long-term returns through:
- Employment
- Remittances
- Stronger institutions
- A globally experienced workforce
Closing the session, Kumar Ramanikant, IAS, Secretary, Industries and Commerce, confirmed that the platform is already delivering tangible employment outcomes. He added that exposure to Japan’s disciplined, quality-driven work culture will ultimately strengthen enterprises back home when youth return with global experience.
🤝 MoUs That Turn Vision Into Reality
The inaugural session concluded with the exchange of key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs):
- Konnekt Asia, in partnership with IDAN, was appointed Nagaland’s official representative in Japan
- NYK and IDAN signed an MoU for integrated development
These agreements institutionalize training, internships, international placements, and investment support—ensuring the initiative moves from vision to execution.
