NMC Approves 6,850 New MBBS Seats for 2025-26: Major Boost for Medical Education in India
Key Highlights of the Expansion
- Total Increase: 6,850 new MBBS seats nationwide
- Government Colleges: 13 new colleges (1,050 seats) + 32 existing colleges (1,080 seats)
- Private Sector: 10 new colleges (1,200 seats) + 28 existing colleges (1,515 seats)
- Admissions Frozen: Around 2,000 seats temporarily on hold for non-compliance, with a chance for colleges to rectify issues
This strategic move aims to meet India’s growing demand for healthcare professionals while improving clinical training opportunities.
State-Wise Expansion
Several states have benefited from new government and private medical colleges:
- Kerala: Government Medical College, Kasargod – 50 seats
- Uttar Pradesh: ESIC Medical College, Noida – 50 seats
- Andhra Pradesh: Anna Gouri Medical College & Hospital – 100 seats
- Rajasthan: Balveer Singh Tomar Institute of Medical Sciences & Research – 150 seats
Existing institutions have also increased their intake, such as Assam Medical College (200 to 250 seats) and Madhubani Medical College, Bihar (additional 100 seats, total 250).
Benefits for Students and Healthcare
A senior government official highlighted that the seat expansion provides more accessible and affordable pathways to a medical career, helping bridge India’s doctor shortage and improving healthcare delivery.
Dr. Ashish Chaudhary, Managing Director of Aakash Healthcare, called it “a much-needed step to strengthen India’s medical system,” while emphasizing that the rise in seats will help meet the country’s growing healthcare demands.
Cost and Regulatory Oversight
- Fee Guidelines: Up to 50% of private/deemed university seats must follow government college fee norms.
- Private MBBS Cost: Despite regulations, private MBBS degrees can cost between ₹60 lakh and ₹1 crore, according to the Economic Survey 2024-25.
The NMC has stressed strict vigilance and scrutiny before granting approvals, ensuring colleges meet infrastructure and faculty standards.
Concerns Over Quality
Not everyone agrees that more seats alone will improve education.
Dr. Dilip Bhanushali, National President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), cautioned that India also needs better medical infrastructure and skilled faculty, warning that simply adding seats may not guarantee quality training.
Conclusion
The NMC’s approval of 6,850 new MBBS seats for 2025-26 is a significant step toward expanding India’s healthcare workforce and creating more opportunities for aspiring doctors. While cost and quality challenges remain, this move promises to ease competition and improve access to medical education for thousands of students across the country.
