Prem Sagar: A Journey in Cinema and Television
Born into one of India’s most iconic creative families, Prem Sagar was the son of Ramanand Sagar, the visionary director who made Ramayan a household name in the late 1980s. Following his passion for cinema, Prem Sagar trained at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, as part of the 1968 batch, where he honed his technical and creative skills.
After completing his studies, he joined his father’s production house, Sagar Arts, and worked extensively on several projects. He started as a still photographer and cinematographer before moving into full-fledged production responsibilities. His contribution to Indian television is particularly remembered through his work on Ramayan, which was first telecast on Doordarshan in 1987 and went on to become one of the most-watched shows in the history of Indian television.

Carrying Forward the Legacy of Ramayan
While Ramanand Sagar is remembered for bringing the epic Ramayan to the television screen, Prem Sagar played a vital role in supporting and strengthening the vision of Sagar Arts. The serial was not just a show—it became a cultural and spiritual phenomenon, uniting millions of Indians who would gather every week to watch the episodes.
Prem Sagar’s deep involvement behind the camera ensured that the show maintained its authenticity, visual depth, and technical quality at a time when Indian television was still evolving. His efforts contributed to the lasting impact of Ramayan, which continues to be re-telecast and cherished even after decades.
