Jaishankar’s Strong Response to Trump’s 50% Tariff
Jaishankar’s Strong Response to Trump’s 50% Tariff : India’s Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar on Wednesday delivered a strong message in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods, alongside a 25% punitive duty on India’s purchase of Russian oil. Speaking after high-level talks with German Deputy Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul in New Delhi, Jaishankar asserted that the shifting global order demands countries to rethink strategies, partnerships, and policies.
Global Changes Shaping India’s Strategy
“The changes we are seeing in the world today affect our policies and our approach to other countries,” Jaishankar said. He highlighted that both geopolitical and economic volatility are reshaping international relations, creating new grounds for India to strengthen its engagement with the European Union (EU) and Germany.
According to Jaishankar, the global strategic landscape is undergoing “significant and far-reaching changes,” and these shifts open opportunities for India to deepen cooperation with like-minded partners.
Why India and Germany Are Pushing for Deeper Ties
During his meeting with Wadephul, Jaishankar emphasized the “enormous potential” in India-Germany relations, particularly as New Delhi faces increasing trade tensions with Washington and Brussels.
“This is a relationship where there is enormous potential for very rapid growth… Our discussions today were mostly focused on bilateral relations,” he said.
He also revealed that Germany has assured full support for India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, signaling a stronger European commitment to faster progress. Wadephul, on his part, reinforced Germany’s interest in boosting collaboration, having already visited Bengaluru to engage with India’s tech and innovation leaders.
Status of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement
India and the EU currently maintain annual merchandise trade worth nearly $190 billion, but ongoing FTA talks in Brussels remain stalled on contentious issues. The EU has been demanding reduced import duties on cars and dairy products, along with binding commitments on environmental and labour standards.
India, however, remains cautious, seeking to protect its farmers, maintain sovereignty over environmental regulations, and retain flexibility in dispute resolution mechanisms.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal recently confirmed that technical-level discussions are ongoing and both sides are hopeful of finalizing a deal by the end of this year.
India’s Stand on US Tariffs and Russian Oil
The U.S. tariffs have added new challenges to India’s trade scenario. Apart from Trump’s 50% tariff, the 25% punitive duty linked to discounted Russian oil imports has sparked strong criticism from New Delhi.
India has accused both the U.S. and EU of “double standards”, pointing out that while India faces penalties, Western nations continue extensive trade with Moscow despite the ongoing war in Ukraine.
This comes against the backdrop of the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China, which showcased shifting power equations. Leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un highlighted new alignments, with Beijing vowing never to be “bullied again.”
Conclusion
Jaishankar’s remarks underline India’s determination to resist external economic pressures while diversifying partnerships with Europe and beyond. As global trade tensions intensify, India is recalibrating its strategies—balancing between long-standing partners like the U.S. while forging deeper, future-oriented ties with Germany and the EU.
The coming months will be crucial in determining whether the India-EU FTA progresses and how New Delhi navigates its economic challenges in a rapidly evolving world order.
