JEE Main 2026 facial recognition : In a major move to curb impersonation and strengthen transparency, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced the introduction of facial recognition technology in entrance examinations, starting with JEE Main 2026. The decision marks a significant shift in how candidate identity will be verified at exam centres across India.
According to senior officials from the Ministry of Education, the new system will combine Aadhaar-based facial biometric authentication with live photography, making the examination process more secure and technology-driven.
What Is Changing in JEE Main 2026?
From January 2026, candidates appearing for JEE Main will undergo real-time facial recognition checks at exam centres. The system works by analysing a candidate’s facial features and matching them with stored records linked to Aadhaar.
In addition to verification at the exam centre, live photographs will be captured during the application process, ensuring that the same individual registers, downloads the admit card, and finally appears for the examination.
Officials believe this will drastically reduce cases of proxy candidates and identity fraud that have plagued competitive exams in the past.
Aadhaar Authentication and UIDAI’s Role
To support the rollout, NTA had earlier issued advisories asking candidates to update and verify their Aadhaar details. This includes name, date of birth, photograph, address, and parental details.
From October, NTA confirmed it would authenticate candidate data directly through Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), ensuring a secure and tamper-proof verification process.
Lessons From NEET-UG Facial Authentication Pilot
The decision to introduce facial recognition in JEE Main follows the successful pilot project conducted during NEET UG 2025. Aadhaar-based face authentication was tested at select centres in Delhi, and early results were encouraging.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology noted that the system effectively prevented impersonation attempts and improved confidence in the examination process.
