Delhi Airport Ebola Screening 2026
As Ebola cases continue to rise in parts of Central Africa, India has stepped up health surveillance measures at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI). Authorities have introduced strict screening protocols for passengers arriving from several high-risk African nations in an effort to prevent any possible spread of the deadly virus within the country.
The move comes after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak in parts of Africa a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern” (PHEIC), prompting countries around the world to tighten airport monitoring and public health preparedness.
Delhi Airport Introduces Strict Ebola Screening Measures
According to airport officials, all international passengers arriving from countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan will now undergo mandatory health screening upon arrival at IGI Airport.
Passengers traveling directly or indirectly from these nations will pass through dedicated screening corridors equipped with contactless thermal scanners. The aim is to identify potential Ebola symptoms at the earliest stage and prevent any possible exposure to other travelers.
Health authorities have also made it compulsory for passengers to submit detailed self-declaration forms mentioning:
- Complete travel history from the last 21 days
- Current health condition
- Symptoms such as fever, fatigue, body pain, vomiting, or unexplained bleeding
- Contact details for monitoring purposes
Officials stated that any traveler showing symptoms or elevated body temperature will immediately be shifted to isolation facilities set up within the airport premises.
Why India Is Taking Ebola Seriously
Although India has not reported any Ebola case so far, the government is acting proactively due to the highly infectious nature of the virus.
Ebola is known for causing severe illness with symptoms that can rapidly worsen if not treated in time. The disease spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids and contaminated surfaces.
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, through the Airport Health Organization (APHO), has issued fresh preventive guidelines to all airports, states, and Union Territories to strengthen monitoring and emergency preparedness.
Central Government Issues Nationwide SOPs
To ensure a coordinated response across India, the Centre has circulated detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) covering:
- Passenger screening protocols
- Isolation and quarantine procedures
- Hospital referral systems
- Contact tracing mechanisms
- Emergency medical response
- Laboratory testing arrangements
State governments have also been instructed to keep isolation wards, rapid response teams, and testing facilities on standby in case of any suspected Ebola case.
WHO Declares Ebola Outbreak a Global Health Concern
The World Health Organization’s recent emergency declaration has increased global concern regarding the outbreak spreading in parts of Central Africa.
Health experts believe that while the current risk to India remains low, increased international travel can raise the chances of imported infections. This is why airport surveillance and early detection remain the most important defense mechanisms.
Experts have also advised travelers to avoid unnecessary travel to outbreak-affected areas and immediately report symptoms if they feel unwell after international travel.
What Travelers Should Know
Passengers arriving from affected African countries are advised to:
- Cooperate fully with airport health officials
- Carry accurate travel records
- Monitor their health for at least 21 days
- Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms appear
- Avoid hiding symptoms or travel history
Authorities have reassured citizens that there is no reason to panic, as India’s public health system is prepared and actively monitoring the situation.
India Strengthens Health Preparedness
The latest measures at Delhi Airport reflect India’s increasing focus on public health security and epidemic preparedness. Following lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic, authorities are now responding more aggressively to potential international health threats.
Officials continue to emphasize that vigilance, early detection, and public cooperation are key to preventing any future outbreak inside the country.
As the global situation evolves, passengers and citizens are advised to follow official government updates and avoid spreading misinformation related to the Ebola outbreak.
